I have something to tell you. I’m going to do it because I want you, friends and family, to be happy.
Ethan & I have been juicing for the past month. As in putting carrots and spinach and apples into a chute and drinking the juice made from them.
I have to tell you this, because it’s been really life-changing for us. It goes way beyond the fact that I actually now consider celery a sustainable food.
We learned of this juicing through my dad, who had exclusively juiced for a month after going to a doctor and learning he had some major cholesterol problems. A month! We tried to talk him out of it, saying it was crazy. WHERE WAS HIS PROTEIN?! It turned out that the only crazy things about it were the amount of weight he lost, how much his cholesterol decreased, and how much better he felt. We watched a Netflix documentary, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead about juicing soon after chatting with my dad and thought: why not?
First, I’ll tell you some stuff about myself you probably don’t care to know. I’m not the most out of shape person of all time. While my most strenuous exercise consists of vacuuming around the couch, I do try to go for a run every now and then. I “eat healthy”- which basically means that much to my family’s protests I try to cook things that don’t involve much dairy or wheat- but I love food. Honestly, I love it. I have a serious weakness for sweets (Cookie Dough is my drug of choice). I seriously agonize over almost everything I eat only to pig out on some thousand calorie chocolate temptation. I’ve never EVER had beautiful skin and literally the only time in my life since I was 12 that I didn’t get pimples was the 9 months I was pregnant. Like I said, I run, but I never felt like I lost weight from it. On the contrary, I always felt bloated and building muscle made me look like an ox because I never burned off anything.
Are you picturing Shrek? That’s pretty close.
So the husband and I did 5 days of juice only (3 or 4 or 5 juices a day) and since then we have been replacing one or two meals a day with juice or having a juice or two a day. I would never lie to you- those first days of detoxing the body were HARD. I dreamt of Mint Oreo Blizzards every single night. Feeding Brady his Macaroni and Cheese was terrible. I became a creepy person walking into restaurants just to smell the food… it was bad.
A month later, the difference is really quite extraordinary. I feel so different- even now that I’m not exclusively juicing. I’m fuller quicker, I crave sweets WAY less often, and I can actually restrain myself from eating the rest of Brady’s yummy food when he abandons it. Juicing helped me to really reprogram my body to crave natural foods and nutrients. My skin is smoother and I don’t break out. I didn’t lose a ton of weight- only 5 lbs- but it has stayed off through my gluttonous Easter candy feast and a week in Florida eating at a restaurant every night. My cravings for fried foods almost disappeared, and even when I snacked or treated myself I didn’t feel guilty like I would have on any other diet. I felt less lazy all day, my workouts improved, and my mood lifted. For the first time in my whole life, I felt in control of my body. Flooding my body with nutrients by juicing has really changed my perspective on food and nutrients more than any “diet” or “health food” ever has.
Now, obviously I’m not a paid scientist. There are loads of health benefits you can read about elsewhere. I’m just a weird Shrek-shaped lady trying to give you her juice testimony.
If, like I did, you’re feeling frustrated with your body and cravings and looking for a way to ‘reset’ things, I encourage you to at least research adding some juice to your day. It would also be helpful to people who have jobs like Ethan- sitting in a cubicle all day long- where it might be difficult to get the nutrients your body craves (By the way, he has lost something like 15lbs). Buying the produce was no more expensive than our usual grocery bill because we went to a local farmer’s market for almost all of it. The juicer we bought was an investment- but like anything, you can buy high-end or low-end depending on your situation.
I wanted to share this with you, even though it’s a little different than what I usually post about on here, because your relationship with your body affects your relationships with others. Feeling confident in yourself is so important- even if you don’t need to lose weight or aren’t looking to do so. I’ll never be a skinny person. That doesn’t mean I can never be a healthy person. There’s so much out there telling you what healthy is and what beautiful is- but honestly, the most beautiful and most healthy people are happy.
Regardless of what you think about juicing, what’s most important is that you are making the choice to care for yourself in the way you think is best. That’s okay if it’s not a juice cleanse. We found something that worked and continues to work for us, and we wanted to share our newfound excitement about vegetables with you!!
